Multiple Options Getting into Confusion?

Gear boxes don’t fail randomly. Most of the time, when one breaks down early, runs too hot, or just can’t keep up with the load. It wasn’t the gear box’s fault. It was the wrong gear box to begin with. Wrong type, wrong size, or fitted without anyone actually checking if it matched the job.

It happens more than people think. A failed gear box doesn’t just mean replacing a part. It means stopped production, emergency calls, and sometimes damage to everything else connected to it. Getting the right one from the start saves a lot of trouble down the line.

So let’s actually talk about how to get it right what a gear box does, which type fits which real application, and what to have ready when you’re ready to buy.

What a Gear Box Is Actually Doing

A gear box takes the speed coming out of a motor and brings it down to a working speed, while increasing the torque at the output end. Your motor might spin at 1450 RPM, but the conveyor it’s driving needs to run at 25 RPM with real pulling force behind it. The gear box makes that conversion happen cleanly and continuously, shift after shift.

Without it, you’d need a motor so large and so slow it would be completely impractical for most setups. Gear boxes are what make normal-sized motors work for heavy industrial jobs. That’s why they’re inside almost everything that moves in a plant conveyors, mixers, cranes, pumps, packaging machines, cement equipment, water treatment systems.

Different types of gear boxes work in very different ways, and they’re not interchangeable just because the numbers match on paper. Picking the wrong type even at the right ratio is where most selection mistakes happen

A Quick Selection Tip Before You Start Looking

Before you compare any models, you need three things: the input speed from your motor in RPM, the output speed or torque you need at the driven shaft, and how the gear box will be mounted. Everything else type, size, series follows from those. If you’re replacing an existing unit, the nameplate usually has most of what you need. If you’re specifying a new one, describing the application clearly is enough to get started.

Where Each Type Actually Gets Used

Cement Plants & Quarries

Cement production is one of the hardest environments a gear box can work in. Bucket elevators, ball mills, rotary kilns, screw conveyors. They all run heavy loads, full shift, every day, in dust and heat. The gear box doesn’t get a warm up period. It has to be ready from the first minute and stay reliable for years.

Bevel helical gear boxes are built for exactly this. Right-angle drive, high continuous torque, and long service life under load. Pokhara Motors carries the Bevel Helical BH/MBH and the Bevel Helical AK, with the AK going up to 50,000 Nm covering even the heaviest drives in a cement plant or quarry.

Food & Beverage Processing

Bottling lines, filling machines, packaging conveyors, dough mixers speed consistency matters here more than almost anything. When a production line runs at a set pace, any variation in gear box output affects product quality and line efficiency. Smooth, steady operation is what these applications need.

Inline helical gear boxes are the standard fit for food and beverage. They run smoothly, quietly, and hold output speed steadily across a wide power range. Pokhara Motors stocks the Inline Helical NHL/MNHL and the Inline Helical AR, covering torque up to 18,000 Nm and power up to 200 kW enough for most food processing drive requirements.

Water Treatment & Desalination Plants

Sludge scrapers, clarifier drives, filter press drives these don’t move fast. They turn slowly, steadily, for long periods without stopping. The gear box isn’t working in bursts. It’s holding torque continuously at a very low output speed, and it needs to stay reliable through that entire cycle without overheating.

Worm gear boxes handle this duty well. They’re compact, often self-locking so the load can’t back-drive if the motor stops, and they work efficiently at the high reduction ratios slow drives need. Pokhara Motors stocks the Worm Gear Box MI/MU and the Worm Gear Box AWG/AVF/AW for these applications, and the Helical Worm AS where better efficiency at the same compact footprint is needed.

Construction & Concrete Mixing

Transit mixer trucks are a tough application. The drum drive runs loaded and unloaded, in heat, on uneven ground, all day. It’s not a controlled factory environment it’s a construction site with all the conditions that come with it.

The Transmittal Mixer / Truck Mixer Gearbox-300 is purpose-built for concrete mixer drum drives, covering Bonfiglioli 2/3/4.5M3 mixer and truck mixer configurations. It’s designed specifically for this duty cycle, which is why it holds up where a standard industrial gear box wouldn’t.

Ports, Warehouses & Material Handling

Overhead cranes, hoists, dock conveyors, stacker reclaimers material handling involves a lot of shock loading. A crane grab hitting a pile of material, a loaded conveyor starting from rest – the gear box takes that impact every time and needs to handle it without issue.

For hoisting, the Helical Worm AS is a solid fit – it’s self-locking so the load holds position when the motor stops, and it runs more efficiently than a standard worm. For heavy conveyor head shaft drives, the Shaft Mounted AF mounts directly onto the shaft with no coupling or base plate needed – cleaner installation, less alignment work, up to 18,000 Nm and 200 kW.

Oil, Gas & Petrochemical Facilities

Pump drives, agitator drives on processing tanks, compressor auxiliaries. These are demanding applications in tough environments. High heat, humidity, and sometimes corrosive conditions are part of the job. The gear box needs to perform consistently through all of it.

When the requirement is very high torque in a compact, sealed unit that handles shock loads well, planetary gear boxes are the right answer. The load spreads across multiple gear sets at once instead of running through one pair, giving higher torque capacity in a smaller housing. Pokhara Motors stocks the Planetary NRG/MNRG up to 30,000 Nm, and for right-angle agitator drives, the Bevel Helical AK is widely used across this sector.

Textile, Printing & Light Manufacturing

These industries often need output speed to be adjusted mid run while the machine keeps going, without stopping to change settings and without adding electronic drives into the system. It’s a specific requirement that not every gear box type can meet.

Mechanical variators handle this through a purely mechanical arrangement. Turn the handwheel, the output speed changes continuously within its range. No electronics, no programming needed. Pokhara Motors carries the Mechanical Variator MK/MKF and the Mechanical Variator AMV for these applications.

Agriculture & Irrigation Equipment

Feed augers, grain conveyors, irrigation pump drives – agricultural equipment works hard when it runs and needs to be reliable because a breakdown mid-season is genuinely costly. Simple installation and easy maintenance matter just as much as the specs.

Shaft mounted gear boxes are a practical fit for most agricultural drives. They mount directly on the driven shaft with no separate base or coupling needed, and installation is straightforward. The Shaft Mounted PL/PD covers the power levels most agricultural equipment works at and comes in a range of reduction ratios to suit different machines.

What to Have Ready Before You Inquire

You don’t need to be an engineer to get the right gear box – but having a few numbers ready makes the process much faster. Motor speed in RPM. Required output speed, or the reduction ratio if you already know it. Torque at the output shaft in Nm if you have it, or just a clear description of the load and application if you don’t. Mounting arrangement – foot mounted, shaft mounted, or flange mounted. And the motor power in kW.

If you’ve been using a specific brand or series before, mention it. Most of the time it can be matched or crossed over to what’s in stock without any issue. And if you’re not sure about any of these details, just describe the machine and what it’s doing – the team at Pokhara Motors can work through the selection from there.
